FCPD Shares 10 Years of Data on Officer-Involved Shootings

The Sully police district reported three since 2006, while the Fair Oaks district reported none since 2008.

After the Fairfax County Police Department was found to have withheld information in the case of John Geer, an unarmed Springfield man shot and killed by an officer in a 2013 standoff, the department is seeking to be more transparent to the residents it serves.

With this in mind, it released a decade’s worth of data on officer-involved shootings on Tuesday evening, detailing all 37 across its eight police districts. Fairfax City falls within the Fair Oaks district, and Chantilly and Centreville are in the Sully district.

Please refer to the chart above for the breakdown of shootings by year and by district. The majority of shootings (23 of 37) occurred in the four-year span from 2005 to 2008, while only 14 shootings have occurred since the start of 2009.

The Fair Oaks district has seen four officer-involved shootings in the last 10 years, but none since 2008.

In the Sully district, three officer-involved shootings have occurred since 2006, with the most recent taking place last year.
