"The house was built in 1910, so older construction methods," Deputy Chief Eric Craven told Patch. "Crews saw the column and asked for additional resources while in route. When they arrived on the scene, they had fire on the number two floor as well as in the attic and just starting to come through the roof."

The home was sub-divided into two units, one of which had a single occupant inside. That person was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. No other injuries were reported.

About 20 pieces of firefighting equipment responded to the call and a second call was not needed, according to Craven.

"We asked for what's called a RIT task force," he said. "That's a rapid intervention team. Anytime we have a confirmed fire in a structure that complement comes so that's about five more units and on top of that, we had an additional two engines show up."

Although all of the units that responded to the scene were from Fairfax County, a battalion chief from the Fairfax City Fire Department was in charge of the incident.

As of 9:45 a.m., the cause of the fire and damage estimate had not be determined, according Craven.

"We're going to scale it back to three or four fire trucks in about 10 minutes," he said. "Eerybody else will be picking up and going available for service. Those crews will be here for another hour."

Police had closed access to Five Oaks Road at the Blake Lane intersection to allow fire personnel access to the scene.
