Fire Destroys Trailer at I-66 Waste Transfer Station

One worker injured in Sunday blaze, says Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department.

Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of a Sunday afternoon blaze that destroyed a trailer at the Fairfax County I-66 Waste Transfer Station.

Units with the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department responded at about 12:40 p.m. to the transfer station, at 4750 West Ox Road, the fire department said. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from a large wheeler trailer. They brought the fire under control in about 30 minutes.

The aluminum transfer trailer was used to transport solid waste to the Covanta Waste Facility in Lorton, the fire department said. Workers at the transfer station were able to detach the tractor from the trailer before firefighters arrived.

One worker was transported to Fair Oaks Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the fire department said. The trailer was deemed a complete loss.
