Fire, Explosion Destroys House, Prompts Evacuation Of Nearly 50 Homes

A fire destroyed a home after residents reported hearing a loud explosion. Officials suspect a gas leak. Nearly 50 homes were evacuated.

CENTREVILLE, VA — A fire broke out Sunday night at a house located in the 14300 block of Quail Pond Court in Centreville.

Reports came in around 9:48 p.m. about a loud explosion then the house quickly becoming fully engulfed in flames. By the time crews arrived, the home was virtually destroyed.

Residents were asked to avoid the area as firefighters swarmed the scene to battle the blaze.

Around 40 to 50 homes were evacuated in the area surrounding the home due to a suspected gas leak, according to officials with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. They were sent to warming centers for the night.

Officials confirmed Monday morning that there was a gas leak and heavy equipment is at the scene to try and move debris and uncover the source of the leak. Washington Gas investigators also are at the scene.

Officials also confirmed that two people were hurt, including a man who climbed out of a second-story window trying to escape his home who injured his leg. Officials have not stated how the second person was injured and what condition they are in.

Residents are reminded that that if they smell natural gas, leave the area immediately and call the Washington Gas emergency line at 844WASHGAS (8449274427) or 911 from a safe location.
