Fairfax Officials Break Ground On Affordable Housing Project Near George Mason Campus
One University project will bring 240 senior and affordable housing units to property adjacent to George Mason University's Fairfax campus.

FAIRFAX, VA — A group of local officials gathered Thursday at a piece of property adjacent to George Mason University's campus in Fairfax to break ground on the One University Affordable Housing Project.
The 10-acre property, which is owned by the Fairfax County Development and Housing Authority (FCDHA) and located in the Braddock District, will be home to 240 multifamily and senior housing units, as well as a meeting space for the FCDHA.
SCG Development will build, own and operate the 240 units, with 120 available for senior housing and 120 multifamily units serving households that earn up to 60 percent of the area median income. That equates to about $77,400 for a family of four based on fiscal year 2021 numbers.

Braddock District Supervisor James Walkinshaw posted a photo to his official Twitter account on Friday afternoon showing county officials and other community leaders flinging ceremonial shovelfuls of dirt to mark the groundbreaking.
Joining Walkinshaw at the event were Congressman Gerry Connolly, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chair Jeff McKay, FCDHA Chair Melissa McKenna, and former Braddock Supervisor John Cook among others.
"Affordable housing is vital in the pursuit of economic success and opportunity," Connolly said, in a post on Twitter. "This will continue being a priority for me as it was during my days in local government."
Thursday's groundbreaking came just two days after the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted to dedicate an additional $5 million toward affordable housing in the county as part of its Fiscal Year 2022 Mid-Year Review Package.
The supervisors also approved $33 million in financing to develop the nine-story Dominion Square West building, which will bring 175 affordable housing units to Tyson Corner.
