With the assistance of K9 officers and FCPD's helicopter, police searched the area. Although they did not find the suspect, they discovered a firearm believed to be related to the shooting. Examining surveillance video, police determined the man and woman appeared to know each other and the shooting was not a random act.
Following a preliminary investigation, detectives determined the man and woman were not residents of the apartment complex and that they had left an apartment before the shooting. The witnesses provided police with information that helped them to identify the woman as 23-year-old Kaitlynn Nicole Nicholas of Harrisonburg. Police obtained a warrant of second degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony for Nicholas.
