Labor Day 2017: What's Open, What's Closed In Fairfax

Labor Day 2017: Trash collection, bus routes and government offices will all be impacted by the holiday weekend in Fairfax City.

FAIRFAX, VA — If you happen to work at, say, the beach, Labor Day represents one of the busier weekends of the summer, if not the entire year. It's one final chance for tourists to fill up the coffers, from the Outer Banks in North Carolina to Ocean City in Maryland. But for city and county governments, Labor Day is a chance to hit the pause button.

As such, here's the schedule for Fairfax City on Sept. 4, which, alas, marks the unofficial end of summer. (For more local news, click here to sign up for real-time news alerts. Also, like us on Facebook, and if you have an iPhone, click here to get the free Patch iPhone app.)

  • City government offices — closed
  • General District Court — closed
  • Recycling Center — closed
  • CUE Bus runs on a Saturday schedule
  • Fairfax Museum Museum and Visitor Center is open
  • Refuse and recycling are not collected; Monday and Tuesday routes are collected on Tuesday, 9/5

The city advises that collecting multiple days' worth of debris on a single day may cause atypical delays in collection, and occasionally brush collection may occur over a period of days (depending on weather and season).

Fairfax does not collect debris (refuse, recycling, yard waste, etc.) on holidays observed by the city. For information, call 703-385-7837. Receive electronic updates on trash and recycling collection — sign up for Fairfax City Alert, the city's electronic message alert system.
