FAIRFAX CITY, VA — City of Fairfax Police are warning the public to be on the lookout for mail thefts, after the report of a number of recent thefts from outdoor mail collection boxes located at various U.S. Post Offices, according to a police release.

"Citizens should ensure any checks, banknotes, or other important financial document have reached their intended destination. To avoid theft, citizens are encouraged to utilize the collection boxes located inside the post office," according to the release.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Services is in charge of investigating reports of mail theft and tampering. Residents can file a report online.

City police are working with USPS on any investigations taking place in within city limits. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity by calling the department's non-emergency number at 703-385-7924.
