Police: New School Start Times Could Impact Traffic on Old Lee Highway

School starts Sept. 8 for Fairfax County Public Schools.

The City of Fairfax Police Department alerts drivers that the new start times for Fairfax County Public Schools that begins Sept. 8 may affect traffic later than in years past, particularly on Old Lee Highway.

Start times for schools on Old Lee Highway are:

• St. Leo’s Elementary School: 8 a.m.

• Fairfax High School: 8:10 a.m. (new time)

• Daniels Run Elementary School: 9 a.m.

Fairfax High School’s new start time (70 minutes later than the previous school year) is expected to affect traffic on Old Lee Highway after 7:40 a.m. on school days.

Please note: Fairfax High School’s dismissal time has been changed to 2:55 p.m. — this also could impact afternoon traffic, which traditionally is lighter than morning traffic on Old Lee Highway.

Drivers always must observe the 30 miles per hour speed limit on Old Lee Highway and be alert for pedestrians attempting to use crosswalks and for bicyclists using traffic lanes.
