Virginia is holding on to millions of dollars in unclaimed money, with one in four Virginians unaware that the state has cash or property that rightfully belongs to them. In the 2019 fiscal year, about $87.1 million in unclaimed assets was returned to Virginians, setting a record, according to a news release. The Virginia Department of the Treasury's unclaimed property program said the dollar figure returned is a 9.5 percent increase from the previous record-setting fiscal year in 2018, which was $79 million.

A New Jersey man is facing multiple child pornography-related charges after police arrested him Aug. 10 at a Fairfax City hotel. Paul W. Ascencia, 33, of Jersey City, N.J., was at the hotel attempting to meet a 16-year-old girl he had communicated with via social media, police said.
George Mason University Tweets — Then Takes Back — Shooter Alert
George Mason University students received a frightening alert from school officials, warning them about an active shooter on campus, and to take shelter and defend themselves if necessary. However, the university deleted the tweet and sent another five minutes later, stating the warning was "inadvertently sent."
A number of people were without power in Fairfax City Aug. 24. Fairfax City police said Dominion Power were notified and they sent crews to investigate the cause. On the utility's outage map, it showed there were just over 1,900 customers without power.
Police Search For Driver In Fatal Fairfax Hit And Run
Fairfax County police were looking for the driver of a vehicle that left the scene of an accident after hitting and killing a pedestrian.
Police said they were searching for a red 2016-2018 Hyundai Elantra, and it's likely the vehicle had damage to its front passenger side. The fatal accident happened in the 12500 block of Fair Lakes Circle, causing police to shut down the road for a period of time.
