Traffic Alert: Road Closures, Detours for Independence Day

Streets to be closed for parade, fireworks and gathering of firefighters.

These detours will be in effect Saturday for Fourth of July activities in Fairfax City:

  • Parade: Route 236/Main Street will be detoured to North Street from 7:30 a.m. until after the parade concludes (around noon). During that time, affected portions of University Drive, George Mason Boulevard and Route 123/Chain Bridge Road will be rerouted and parking will be restricted on those roads.
  • Muster: University Drive will be closed from Sager Avenue to Armstrong Street from about noon to 5 p.m. for the World Police and Fire Games Firefighter Muster at Fire Station 3, 4081 University Drive.
  • Evening Fireworks: No through traffic will be permitted from about 9:15 p.m. to about 11 p.m. on Old Lee Highway. Please note: If the fireworks are postponed to Sunday, the Old Lee Highway detours will be in effect at that time.
