VA Coronavirus Deaths Pass 400; 9 New Deaths In Fairfax County

The number of deaths in Virginia from the coronavirus passed 400 on Friday as health officials reported 38 new deaths from Thursday.

VIRGINIA — The number of deaths in Virginia from the new coronavirus passed 400 on Friday as state health officials reported 38 new deaths from the day before. Henrico County health officials have reported the most deaths in the state at 86, with Fairfax County reporting 85 deaths from COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus.

Virginia's number of positive new coronavirus cases increased by 596 from Thursday to Friday, according to the Virginia Department of Health's latest data. The total number of cases stands at 11,594, including 11,169 laboratory-confirmed cases and 425 probable cases among patients with symptoms and a known exposure to COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus.

Earlier this week, the Virginia Department of Health released data on cases of the new coronavirus by county and independent city. That includes data on deaths, hospitalizations, cases per 100,000 people and breakdowns by ages and race. However, racial data remains missing for 32.5 percent of cases.

Localities with the highest rates of cases per 100,000 people as of Friday are:

  • Richmond County: 730.3 cases per 100,000 people; 66 total cases
  • Harrisonburg: 657.0 cases per 100,000 people; 355 total cases
  • Southampton: 426.5 cases per 100,000 people; 75 total cases
  • Emporia: 351.5 cases per 100,000 people; 18 total cases
  • Alexandria: 340.7 cases per 100,000 people; 547 total cases
  • Manassas: 329.0 cases per 100,000 people; 137 total cases
  • Accomack: 308.5 cases per 100,000 people; 100 total cases
  • Arlington: 304.0 cases per 100,000 people; 722 total cases

Fairfax County leads the state with 2,534 cases, followed by Prince William County with 1,110, Henrico County with 729, Arlington County with 722, Alexandria with 547 and Loudoun County with 529.

  • Alexandria: 547 cases, 81 hospitalizations, 15 deaths
  • Arlington County: 722 cases, 120 hospitalizations, 24 deaths
  • Fairfax County: 2,534 cases, 455 hospitalizations, 85 deaths
  • Fairfax City: 26 cases, three hospitalizations, two deaths
  • Falls Church: 24 cases, two hospitalizations, two deaths
  • Loudoun County: 529 cases, 67 hospitalizations, 10 deaths
  • Manassas: 137 cases, 20 hospitalizations, one death
  • Manassas Park: 44 cases, six hospitalizations, one death
  • Prince William County: 1,110 cases, 112 hospitalizations, 18 deaths
  • Fredericksburg: 21 cases, three hospitalizations, no deaths
  • Spotsylvania County: 97 cases, 20 hospitalizations, three deaths
  • Stafford County: 193 cases, 38 hospitalizations, two deaths

The Virginia Department of Health reports 1,837 hospitalizations, but the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association has more detailed information on current hospital resource use and discharged patients. As of Friday, 1,399 people with confirmed or pending COVID-19 test results are hospitalized, a slight increase from Thursday. The association says 1,672 confirmed COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospitals, up from 1,567 people on Thursday.

Of the hospitalized people with pending or confirmed results, 220 are on a ventilator and 379 are in the intensive care unit (ICU). There are 646 ventilators in use of the available 2,903 ventilators at Virginia hospitals. That represents 22 percent use of ventilators available in Virginia.

Virginia reported its first confirmed coronavirus case on March 7. As of Friday, 69,015 people in the state have been tested for the virus, an increase of 4,497 from Thursday's report.
