VDOT Wants Toll Lanes, Other Big Changes on I-66

Department to unveil plans to public next week for HOV-3, Metro extension on traffic-clogged artery

An official with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced plans Wednesday to add toll lanes along Interstate 66.

Outside the Capital Beltway (I-495), VDOT in the next few years would add one new lane from the Beltway to Haymarket, then convert the existing HOV lane to a toll lane, according to a report from radio station WTOP. Plans also call for toll lanes on I-66 inside the Beltway.

In addition, VDOT is proposing to change HOV rules on I-66 to require three or more passengers in vehicles instead of the current two.

Similar to the 495 and 95 express lanes, HOV users on I-66 would ride for free and non-HOV users would have to pay a toll, WTOP reported. VDOT also is studying a Metro Orange Line extension along I-66 from Vienna out to Haymarket.

VDOT, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation, will host a series of public information meetings next week on plans to transform I-66 outside the Beltway.

Alternatives being evaluated for I-66 include express lanes, high-frequency bus service and direct access to new or expanded commuter lots.

All meeting times are from 6-8:30 p.m., with a brief presentation starting at 7 p.m.
