Vehicles Vandalized at Fairfax High School: Police

One racial epithet was scratched on a vehicle but Fairfax Police say there's no indication of a hate crime. Video surveillance caught it.

FAIRFAX, VA — Seven school-owned vehicles were vandalized Monday night in the parking lot of Fairfax High School with words and phrases scratched onto them that included one racial epithet, according to Fairfax Police.

The majority, though, mostly were simple profanities, and were discovered following a basketball game at the school.

"There's absolutely nothing to support (that this) was a hate crime or anything of that sort," Fairfax Police Sgt. Shawn Sutherland said Wednesday, adding the incident had all the earmarks of mischievous kids, and that video surveillance cameras recorded the deeds.

"And if it's high school kids, they'll be facing the music."

The vehicles had been donated to the school's automotive program.

Sutherland pointed out that while the vehicles were nothing more than tools for the auto-shop students, vandalism is vandalism.

"That's a crime, period," he said.

Sutherland added that the video clearly shows the suspects, and that once school resumes after the holiday break, police will be working with school officials about identification.
