Virginia Reports Smallest Increase In Deaths Since Early April

The three deaths reported overnight by Virginia health officials are the smallest number of deaths reported in one day since April 6.​

VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 463 additional cases of the coronavirus and three new deaths Thursday. The three deaths reported overnight are the smallest number of deaths reported in one day since April 6.

Of the new cases reported Thursday in Virginia, 250, or 54.0 percent, came from the Northern Virginia region. On Wednesday, only 124, or 27.9 percent, of the new coronavirus cases came from the Northern Virginia region.

Each of the major jurisdictions in Northern Virginia saw a bigger daily increase in coronavirus cases Thursday than the reported increases on Wednesday. Fairfax County's reported positive cases increased by 106 Thursday compared to an increase of 50 on Wednesday. Prince William County reported 63 new cases on Thursday compared to 33 new cases on Wednesday.

Loudoun County saw the number of positive cases increase by 41 on Thursday compared to 19 new cases on Wednesday. Alexandria reported 11 new cases compared to seven new cases on Wednesday. And in Arlington County, new cases totaled 10 on Thursday compared to nine on Wednesday.

The latest cumulative totals for all of Virginia are 56,238 positive cases, 5,744 hospitalizations and 1,586 deaths.

As of Thursday, 499,599 tests (excluding antibody tests) have been completed in Virginia. The seven-day average for percent of positive test results was at 7.2 percent, down from 7.3 percent as of Wednesday. The percent is also down from a peak of 22.2 percent on April 19.

According to the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, as of Thursday, 857 people were hospitalized for COVID-19, a big drop from the 938 reported hospitalized on Wednesday. So far, 7,493 patients with the virus have been discharged after being hospitalized, up from 7,429 Wednesday.

As of Thursday, there were 129 pending or confirmed COVID-19 patients on ventilators, up from 120 on Wednesday. Among all Virginia hospital patients, 581 of 2,982 available ventilators are being used, representing 19 percent use. No hospitals are reporting difficulty obtaining or restocking personal protective gear or other medical supplies within the next 72 hours.

Here are the latest cumulative case updates for our coverage areas from Wednesday to Thursday:

  • Alexandria: 2,186 cases, 229 hospitalizations, 48 deaths; increase of 11 cases and four hospitalizations.
  • Arlington County: 2,382 cases, 409 hospitalizations, 126 deaths; increase of 10 cases, two hospitalizations and two deaths.
  • Fairfax County: 13,209 cases, 1,529 hospitalizations, 431 deaths; increase of 106 cases, 20 hospitalizations and three deaths.
  • Fairfax City: 67 cases, seven hospitalizations, six deaths; one fewer case and one fewer death reported.
  • Falls Church: 58 cases, 11 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes.
  • Loudoun County: 3,499 cases, 228 hospitalizations, 82 deaths; increase of 41 cases, 11 hospitalizations and two deaths.
  • Manassas: 1,337 cases, 88 hospitalizations, 14 deaths; increase of 17 cases and one hospitalization.
  • Manassas Park: 393 cases, 45 hospitalizations, six deaths; increase of three cases.
  • Prince William County: 6,684 cases, 624 hospitalizations, 127 deaths; increase of 63 cases and three hospitalizations.
  • Fredericksburg: 218 cases, 24 hospitalizations, no deaths; increase of three cases.
  • Spotsylvania County: 862 cases, 56 hospitalizations, 17 deaths; increase of four cases.
  • Stafford County: 917 cases, 91 hospitalizations, five deaths; increase of 11 cases.
