Virginia Sets New Record For Daily Coronavirus Cases

Virginia saw its biggest increase in coronavirus cases Saturday since the start of the pandemic, with 2,103 new cases reported.

VIRGINIA — Virginia saw its biggest increase in coronavirus cases Saturday since the start of the pandemic, with 2,103 new cases reported by the Virginia Department of Health. The new cases lifted the seven-day case average for the state to a new high of 1,383.

Across Virginia, cases have totaled more than 1,000 for 12 straight days, contributing to a recent increase in the seven-day average. A month ago on Oct. 7, the seven-day average was 774.

Saturday is only the second day since March that daily case numbers have surpassed 2,000 in Virginia. The other day was Aug. 7 when the daily case count totaled 2,015.

The total number of cases per 100,000 people over the last 14 days was 217.2. The seven-day average of new daily cases per 100,000 people was 16.2, up from 15.3 on Friday.

Southwest Virginia led the way in new cases reported Saturday. Health officials in the region reported 715 new cases (427.7 seven-day average). Elsewhere in the state, new cases totaled 460 in the northern region (336.6 seven-day average), 343 in the central region (222.4 seven-day average), 316 in the eastern region (210.4 seven-day average) and 269 in the northwest region (186.1 seven-day average).

Current statewide hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients stand at 1,062. The seven-day average of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Virginia is 1,041.9. A month ago on Oct. 7, the seven-day average of hospitalizations was 920.

The current number of hospitalizations includes 279 patients in the southwest region (seven-day average of 285.9), 251 in the northern region (seven-day average of 238.4), 213 in the central region (seven-day average of 206.4), 170 in the eastern region (seven-day average of 180.1), and 149 in the northwest region (seven-day average of 131.0).

The 1,057 statewide hospitalizations include 91 patients on ventilators and 215 in the intensive care units, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. As of Saturday, ventilator use among all hospital patients stands at 29 percent, and ICU occupancy is at 81 percent occupancy. No hospitals are reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment or other medical supplies in the next 72 hours.

The seven-day of positive PCR tests is 6.0 percent across Virginia as of Nov. 3. A month ago on Oct. 7, the average was 4.7 percent. Averages by region are 9.3 percent in the southwest region, 5.8 percent in the northern region, 5.4 percent in the central region, 5 percent in the eastern region, and 4.1 percent in the northwest region. Statewide, 2,766,353 PCR tests have been completed, an increase of 23,124 from Friday.

  • Loudoun County: 8,313 cases, 505 hospitalizations, 134 deaths; increase of 88 cases and seven hospitalizations

  • Manassas Park: 667 cases, 58 hospitalizations, eight deaths; increase of two cases
