The Heat Index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature. As an example, if the air temperature is 96°F and the relative humidity is 65 percent, the heat index — how hot it feels — is 121°F.

A few tips from the National Weather Service:

  • Never leave people or animals in any vehicles, even for a short time, and bring pets indoors.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Stay in air-conditioned rooms and buildings.
  • Stay out of the sun.
  • Check on relatives and neighbors.
  • Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside, when possible. Reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible.
  • If you must work outdoors, schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
  • Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool, shaded location.
  • Heat stoke is an emergency: call 911 immediately for assistance.
