What’s Open, Closed New Year’s Day 2021 In Fairfax City
Whether it's the library or your favorite restaurant or retailer, here's a look at what's open in the area on New Year's Day.
FAIRFAX CITY, VA — On New Year’s Day, residents in Fairfax City will leave behind a year marked by unprecedented hardship and challenges. After spending much of the year navigating the once-in-a-lifetime coronavirus pandemic, many will no doubt welcome 2021 with open arms.
As we ring in the new year in our town, many local facilities and government offices will take the day off to recognize the start of the new year.
Here’s a look at what’s open and closed in the area on New Year’s:

- Fairfax County Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will be closed New Year's Day.
- Cue buses will not run New Year's Day.
- The City of Fairfax Regional Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. New Year's Eve and closed New Year's Day.
- City trash will not be picked up New Year's Day; Friday routes instead will be collected Thursday. The Property Yard Recycling Center, I-66 Transfer Station and I-95 Landfill will be closed New Year's Day. For county collection customers, there will be no recycling collection Jan. 1. Service scheduled on New Year's Day will be collected one day later. Monday through Thursday customers will be collected on their respective days. If you have private collection, contact your hauler. Recycling and Disposal Centers at the I-66 Transfer Station (4618 West Ox Road) and the I-95 Landfill Complex (9850 Furnace Road) will close at 2 p.m. Dec. 31 and will be closed on Jan. 1. Administrative offices will be closed Jan. 1.
- Fairfax City and Fairfax County government offices will be closed Jan. 1.
- From Jan. 1-3, a staff person will be available for residents needing to reclaim a stray pet from the Fairfax County Animal Shelter.
- Community centers are closed on Jan. 1 Normal hours will resume on Jan. 4.
- The state DMV offices are by appointment only; walk-in services are not available at this time. On Jan. 1, there will be service on a Sunday schedule. For more information, visit www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector.
- Metrorail operates on a Sunday schedule from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Metrobus routes operate on a Sunday schedule. Visit www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables.
- All RECenters, historic sites, visitor centers, and nature centers are closed Jan. 1. Frying Pan Farm Park and Green Springs Gardens are closed Jan. 1.
- There is no VRE service on Friday, Jan. 1. For more information, visit www.vre.org.
However, if you’re hoping to step out for some socially distanced shopping or dining, there are several stores and chain restaurants that will be open on New Year’s Day in your area or elsewhere, if you're traveling.

- Dick’s Sporting Goods: Open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Dillard’s: Some stores open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (varies by mall)
- Hobby Lobby: Open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Home Depot: Open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- IKEA: Open regular hours.
- Kohl’s: Open 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Lowe’s: Open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Macy’s: Open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Marshalls: Open regular hours.
- Neiman Marcus: Open noon to 5 p.m.
- PetSmart: Open regular hours.
- Target: Open regular hours.
- TJ Maxx: Open 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Walgreens: Open regular hours.
