Work Halted By Hawks Eggs At Circle Woods Pond In Fairfax To Restart On July 10

With the nesting season over, the Circle Woods Pond project that was put on hold to protect a hawk's eggs will resume on July 10.

The Circle Woods Pond project at East Blake Lane Park will remove sediment in the pond and clear the extensive tree root structure in the embankment, which is the main reason the repairs are needed.

FAIRFAX, VA — Work on the Circle Woods Pond project at East Blake Lane Park in Fairfax will resume on Monday, according to a post on Twitter by Providence District Supervisor Dalia Palchik. The project was put on hold in April after workers discovered a hawk's nest containing eggs in a tree slated for removal.

A nationwide permit with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which is enforced by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, requires authorities to protect the birds and their nest during nesting season, according to the Fairfax County Public Works and Environmental Services.

In order to remain in compliance with the permit, the construction team and the Fairfax County Park Authority made the decision in early April to stop active work on the site until nesting season ended in June.

The project seeks to make repairs and improvements to the detention dam at the Circle Woods Pond, as part of the Fairfax County Stormwater Facility Maintenance Program.

The project, which is funded at $685,000, will include removing sediment in the pond and clearing extensive tree root structure in the embankment, which is the main reason the repairs are needed. The project will also improve water flow and outfall across the nearby East Blake Lane Trail.
