Liberal Leave for Falls Church City Employees Wednesday

City prepares for possible overnight freeze.

City government employees may take liberal (unscheduled) leave on Wednesday, Jan. 7, after checking with their supervisor, according to a news release from the City of Falls Church. City offices will open on time.

City crews have been working since 4 a.m. Tuesday morning to clear roads and expect to have established at least one lane of clear pavement on all roads by 5 p.m. Tuesday. In anticipation of roads potentially becoming icy overnight, the City plans to treat roads again starting at 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 7, with the intent of treating every street in the City by 7 a.m. With the cold temperatures anticipated over the next several days, residents are encouraged to exercise caution while driving or walking, as they should expect to encounter icy conditions.

Trash, recycling, and brush collection are expected to take place as scheduled on Wednesday, Jan. 7. Please have carts at the curb by 7 a.m.

Snow Removal Policy
The Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for snow removal in the City right of way. Snow emergency routes receive first priority for salting, sanding, and plowing. Upon completion of clearing these routes, city crews will clear all other streets. DPW uses city crews and private contractors to remove snow and ice from city streets and public parking lots, ensuring safe travel for citizens and emergency equipment.

Clearing snow from driveways and entrances is the responsibility of the resident. Plow operators focus on clearing streets. They do not have control over the snow coming off the edge of the blade, and their plows cannot be adjusted for the sharp turns required to clear driveways.

Residents must remove snow and ice from sidewalks surrounding the property 12 hours after snowfall; commercial property owners have 6 hours after snowfall. If the snow falls at night, residents have 12 hours and commercial property owners have 6 hours after sunrise to remove it. Snow and ice must not be placed on city streets.

If you need help shoveling, call Recreation & Parks at 703-248-5077 (TTY 711) for a list of teens who are available for hire.
