64 Residents Displaced By Hybla Valley Apartment Fire

Several residents were evaluated by medics on scene but did not seek hospital treatment, according to the fire department.

HYBLA VALLEY, VA — An apartment fire in Hybla Valley Tuesday displaced 64 residents, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

The fire happened at a garden-style apartment in the 7500 block of Vernon Square Drive. Displaced residents were assisted by the Fairfax County Office of Emergency Management and Security.

Units from Fairfax County and Alexandria responded around 2:54 a.m. Tuesday and found smoke showing from the second and third floors. The fire was found in a storage room and extinguished.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department

One resident had discovered smoke after hearing the building's smoke alarm. As the fire was located and extinguished, crews helped multiple residents out of their apartments, and one was rescued. Medics evaluated several residents on the scene, but the residents declined to be taken to the hospital. There were no firefighter injuries.

Fire investigators determined the cause of the fire to be an electrical malfunction involving the electrical wiring in the ceiling space. The fire was traced back to a terrace level storage room. Damages were estimated to be approximately $125,000.
