When we opened our gallery doors in March 2022 we proudly displayed an assortment of original watercolors by the delightful and irresistible artist and human Evelyn Dunphy—-and she brightened our walls and our souls! We have hosted Evelyn, and her best pal Ann, several times and have loved every moment of it! We will share our entire collection of Evelyn’s beautiful paintings and offer our guests, friends and collectors the opportunity to enjoy them once again at Nepenthe Gallery!

He is most famous for his “Give me liberty or give me death” speech in early 1775, but he also had difficult military experiences during the war. John R. Maass, Ph.D., is an education specialist and historian at the National Museum of the United States Army. He received a Ph.D. from the Ohio State University in early U.S. and military history. His most recent book is “From Trenton to Yorktown: Turning Points of the Revolutionary War.” (2025).

Entrepreneur and full-time contemporary artist SUNNY GOODE at Nepenthe Gallery

Little Shop of Horrors follows nerdy florist Seymour Krelborn, who finds fame and fortune after discovering a mysterious, alien plant he names "Audrey II". The R&amp;B-singing, man-eating plant is very demanding, forcing Seymour to do his bidding.
Little Shop of Horrors centers on themes of fatal ambition, greed, and the high cost of success. It explores the dangers of giving in to temptation, the exploitation of the poor, and the destruction caused by unbridled desire.
The musical features a mix of dark comedy, rock-and-roll, and doo-wop music, exploring themes of greed and sacrifice. Performed by 46 Alexandria youth, this promises to be one of the most dynamic and entertaining local production you will see this year.

Carlyle House Historic Park

In honor of National Preservation Month, join Carlyle House on a tour of “Lost Alexandria.” Urban renewal projects across the country took place starting in the 1950s were government and private initiatives aimed at addressing urban decay, upgrading infrastructure and revitalizing city neighborhoods. In the 1960s, the Gadsby Commercial Urban Renewal Project changed and demolished portions of multiple blocks including the 300-500 block of King Street.&nbsp;
During May’s Preservation Tours, tour guides will lead groups through the south side of the 300-500 blocks of King Street and parts of the 100 blocks of N. Fairfax, N. Royal, &amp; N. Pitt Streets to discuss what had been here, why they were destroyed, and how that impacted Alexandria. In September we will host the north side of the 300-500 blocks of King Street and parts of the 100 blocks of S. Fairfax, S. Royal, &amp; S. Pitt Streets. It is not required to attend the Spring tour to understand the Fall tour and vice versa.&nbsp;

Tours begin at Carlyle House, 121 N. Fairfax Street. This tour includes walking over many city blocks. South side tours will take place on three Saturdays in May all at 10am and the north side will take place on three Saturdays in September . Walking shoes required, bottled water suggested. Held rain or shine. Tickets are required for all tours.&nbsp;

Preservation Tours: Lost Buildings of Alexandria-Urban Renewal (South Side of King)

Alexandria has grown from a small town in the 18th century to a bustling small city in the 21st century. Join us for a tour of Alexandria&nbsp; as we explore looking at the various Architecture styles that adorn the city streets and make it one of the best places to live and work.&nbsp;

Reservations are required as space is limited. Please wear comfortable shoes for this 1.5 hour guided tour. Tour is held rain or shine unless there is severe weather.&nbsp;

Come learn about being a detective and investigator during our special Girl Scout Day Program! Scouts will learn about fingerprinting, forensics, and solving puzzles. This program requires 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. Groups do not need to arrive at 12 pm. However, it is required that scout groups arrive by 1:30 pm to have enough time to complete all activities. The Adventure Program will assist the Girl Scouts to obtain the following badges: Daisy and Brownies: Cybersecurity Investigators and STEM Career Exploration, Juniors: Detectives and STEM Career Exploration
$12 per scout, $6 per tag-a-long (non-scout sibling)

It is recommended that the scouts bring a bag of some type to carry crafts and handouts during the program. This program is outdoors and will take place rain or shine. Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate walking shoes.

Capacity is limited. If capacity is reached, a waitlist will be created.

Alexandria History Museum at the Lyceum

Ima Hogg (1882-1975), daughter of James Stephen Hogg, the first native-born governor of Texas, lived for a time in the Texas governor’s mansion in Austin. The experience helped shape her appreciation for both antique furniture and history. In the early 1920s, she began to collect American antiques, including glass, ceramics, and furniture. Later in the decade, she embarked on the construction of Bayou Bend in Houston, which would be her home until the 1960s. As her collection grew, Miss Hogg resolved that she would establish a museum, seeking to bring early American art and history to Texas. She made gifts of her home and collection to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Bayou Bend opened to the public in 1966. Miss Hogg’s remarkable foresight, determination, and humility created an institution that has grown and flourished, and that continues to interpret an expanding narrative of American art and history via its collections and programs. This presentation will explore the development of the Bayou Bend Collection under Miss Hogg’s guidance and will also discuss more recent additions.
Bradley Brooks is a specialist in historic house museums with a background in American decorative arts. He came to Bayou Bend in 2015 from the Indianapolis Museum of Art, where he served as founding curator for two historic house museums, Oldfields, the J. K. Lilly, Jr. residence, and Eero Saarinen’s Miller House. He also served as assistant curator of American decorative arts. Previously, he was director of the McFaddin-Ward House in Beaumont, Texas; and founding curator, then director, of the Moody Mansion in Galveston. He earned a B.A. in communication arts from Elizabethtown College, and an M.A. in early American culture from the Winterthur Program of the University of Delaware. Please join us in welcoming Bradley to Alexandria.
