Darlene R. Taylor is a Master Instructor and co-faculty advisor to the Sterling A. Brown English Society at Howard University. She is also a multidisciplinary artist and fiction writer. Her creative works in fiction and mixed media collage, examine silences in historical archives and reclaim narratives of Black life.

We have been waiting a long time to introduce the Nepenthe Community to this wondrous woman and artist!

Generations of Americans have used military service to expand notions of citizenship and advance civil rights. As a result, military service has become a tool to broaden the concept of “the people” and what it means to be an American.
During World War I, over 200 women served the American Expeditionary Forces as telephone operators connecting calls between the front line and higher headquarters. The women, nicknamed the “Hello Girls,” worked tirelessly, under at times combat conditions as the first women to actively support combat operations.
In this History Talk explore the commitment, sacrifices, and challenges of the Hello Girls and how their service paved the way for women’s right to vote.

Under the artistic direction of Dr. James Wolter (DMA, Eastman School of Music), the Mount Vernon Chamber Singers bring exceptional vocal artistry and a diverse repertoire to our Friends of Music Concert Series. This talented ensemble has been captivating audiences throughout the Alexandria and Mount Vernon area with their stunning performances.
The concert will be followed by a reception where you'll have the opportunity to meet the performers and enjoy refreshments.

Carlyle House Historic Park

Join our yoga instructor for an hour long Yoga Class on Carlyle House’s Magnolia Terrace. A gentle flow yoga class. We will build heat with sun salutations then progress to balance, deep stretching and finally relaxation. Please bring water, a towel, and a yoga mat. Wear comfortable yoga wear.
Class may be canceled due to inclement weather, you will receive an email if class is canceled. Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm and Saturdays at 9am and 10:15am, from May through October.
