Fairfax County Election Results 2019: Board Of Supervisors Chosen
Live 2019 election results: Residents voted in races that determined the makeup of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — The makeup of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will look different after voters cast their ballots in the Tuesday, Nov. 5 general election. Polls closed at 7 p.m., and results are in.
Democrat Jeff McKay is the projected winner of the chairman race over Republican Joe Galdo. McKay will leave his Lee District supervisor seat when the new board takes office in 2020.
According to unofficial results, James Walkinshaw, a Democrat, flipped the Braddock District seat held by retiring Republican John Cook. Other projected winners are John Foust in the Dranesville District; Walter Alcorn in the Hunter Mill District; Rodney Lusk in the Lee District; Penny Gross in the Mason District; Dan Storck in the Mount Vernon District; Dalia Palchik in the Providence District; Pat Herrity in the Springfield District and Kathy Smith in the Sully District. Herrity remains the only Republican on the Board of Supervisors.

All seats were up for election, and several incumbents did not run. Members not seeking another term are Chairman Sharon Bulova, Braddock District Supervisor John Cook, Hunter Mill District Supervisor Cathy Hudgins and Providence District Supervisor Linda Smyth.
State legislative elections gave Democrats control of the House and Senate. A key flip happened in House District 40, as Democrat Dan Helmer was declared the projected winner over Republican Tim Hugo. In the School Board race, Abrar Omeish, 24, declared victory in her race to make history as both the youngest woman and first Muslim woman to hold elected office in Virginia. She released a statement shortly before 10 p.m. declaring victory in her race for a seat for Fairfax County School Board At-Large, with unofficial results showing her finishing in second (the top three win seats) against five other candidates. Other projected at-large winners are Karen Keys-Gamarra and Rachna Sizemore Heizer.
Other projected School Board winners are Megan McLaughlin in the Braddock District; Elaine Tholen in the Dranesville District; Melanie Meren in the Hunter Mill District; Tamara Derenak Kaufax in the Lee District; Ricardy Anderson in the Mason District; Karen Corbett Sanders in the Mount Vernon District; Karl Frisch in the Providence District; Laura Jane Cohen in the Springfield District; and Stella Pekarsky in the Sully District. Members serve four-year terms and select a chair and vice chair.
Voters approved a $360 million school bond question for school improvement projects, according to unofficial results. The school projects included in the referendum are two new elementary schools, three high school additions, 10 elementary school renovations and two middle school renovations.

Voters also chose candidates for Commonwealth's Attorney and sheriff. Democrat Steve Descano is the projected winner for Commonwealth's Attorney after ousting incumbent Ray Morrogh in the primary. Fairfax County Sheriff Stacey Kincaid, a Democrat, is the projected winner in her race.
