County trash and recycling collection is running behind on services, according to a Wednesday update. County collection customers scheduled on Monday have collection on Wednesday, and Tuesday customers have collection Thursday. Collection will happen on Saturday as well. This only applies to county collection customers; private customers should check with their hauler.

The Mount Vernon Governmental Center at 2511 Parkers Lane, Alexandria is one of the county's purple bins for glass recycling. Glass is no longer collected in curbside recycling as of October 2019. Residents either have to take their glass to a purple recycling bin or throw it in the trash.
The county's decision to remove glass from curbside service was made with Covanta Fairfax and private recycling sorting centers due to broken glass contaminating other recycled items. Through the regional glass collection program at 21 purple bins, glass is taken to the glass processing plant in Lorton and crushed for various projects.
