Hayfield Girls Take Care of Washington-Lee
Hawks qualify for regionals, will face Mount Vernon in second round of districts

It appeared as if Washington-Lee High School might finally be able to defeat the Hayfield Hawks. After suffering an 18-point loss to the Hawks right before Christmas and a 14-point home loss in a game that was rescheduled due to inclement weather, the Colonials appeared to be on the verge of finally defeating the Hawks.
But their Valentine's Day matchup still showed Washington-Lee no love, as Hayfield defeated them 48-40 in the opening round of the AAA National District Tournament.
“You know it’s tough to beat a team three times,” Hayfield head coach Rudy Coffield said. “This is playoff basketball though, like I told them after the game, we win, we move on and live to play another game and another night.”

After taking a five-point lead at halftime, the Hawks came out cold offensively in the third quarter, but still managed to hang on to the lead. Junior guard Lindsey Chester played a superb game for Hayfield, finishing with 15 points and 10 rebounds. She made 9-of-13 free throw attempts and did a great job defensively on the Washington-Lee guards.
Tatiana Torres was the leading scorer for the Generals with 14 points. Every time it seemed as though Hayfield would pull away with the game, Torres kept them in it.

With the victory the Hawks move on to the second round of the tournament to face the Mount Vernon Majors, who defeated Stuart High School by a whopping 69 points in the first round. The Majors defeated Hayfield both times when they faced them in the regular season, but the Hawks are looking for a different result on Wednesday.
“Coach [Courtney] Coffer has those girls playing pretty well down there, they’re a small team but they’re very athletic,” Coffield said referring to the Majors. “In the games we played them this year, we played well for three quarters and let them pull away. I told them after tonight’s game, this is playoff basketball, one win at a time and move on.”
