Lightning Sparks Fire At Groveton Home, None Injured

During last week's thunderstorms, a fire started when lightning struck, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

GROVETON, VA — A lightning struck during last Thursday's thunderstorms sparked a fire in Groveton, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

Fire department units responded around 7:03 p.m. to the 6800 block of Duke Drive in Groveton. Units found smoke showing from the single-family home. The fire was quickly put out and contained between the first and second floors. There were no injuries.

No one was home at the time of a fire, but a neighbor noticed smoke coming from the home. A neighbor's doorbell camera caught video of the lighting striking the house.

Fire investigators confirmed the fire's cause to be a lightning strike. The fire started in an exterior wall of a second-floor bedroom. The fire department believes smoke alarms were working and activated during the fire.

Damages were estimated to be $25,000. No residents were displaced from the home.
