Presidential Primaries Getting Another Virginian: Jim Gilmore Planning Entry

Republican and former governor to join GOP primary next month. Former U.S. Sen. Jim Webb announced plans to seek the Democrat nomination.

A growing list of Republicans looking to be the next U.S. president will soon add one more name to the list: Jim Gilmore.

The former Virginia governor from 1998-2002 told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that he’ll announce his campaign in the first week of August.

“I bring to the table experience that others don’t have,” Gilmore told the paper.

Gilmore is the second Virginian to announce a presidential campaign. Former U.S. Sen. Jim Webb recently announced he’d seek the the Democrat nomination. Both are considered long shots.

Jim Gilmore had first sought the GOP nomination in 2008, but ended his campaign early in the primary.

There are already more than a dozen candidates in the 2016 Republican primary, including Jeb Bush, Donald Trump, Marco Rubio, Chris Christie, Rand Paul, Bobby Jindal, Mike Huckabee, Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina, George Pataki, Rick Santorum, and Rick Perry.
