Tips To Have A Safe Trick-Or-Treat Night In Greater Alexandria

Ahead of trick-or-treat, here are some things to consider whether you're taking the kids out or driving.

Little ghosts and goblins are getting ready to go door-to-door in search of sweet treats on Halloween. There are no set trick-or-treat hours in Fairfax County, so you can expect kids to be going door-to-door the evening of Halloween (Wednesday, Oct. 31).

It's important to keep in mind the increased safety hazards with many kids out walking at night. Sharon Eddy, who owns a State Farm Insurance agency on Richmond Highway, has shared her safety tips for local residents.

  • Always accompany young children.
  • Use caution during the “scariest” hours: between 5 p.m.-9 p.m. Studies show the hour between 6 p.m.-7 p.m. is especially dangerous for pedestrian accidents.
  • Stick to neighborhoods with sidewalks. If you must walk on the street, keep to the far left, facing traffic.
  • Practice safe crossing procedures: Use the crosswalk; wait for corners; and look left, right and left again before crossing.
  • Stick reflective tape onto costumes to make your child more visible. Also have him or her carry a flashlight.
  • Make sure costumes and shoes are the correct size to prevent tripping. Use face paint and leave masks at home. Masks can obstruct vision.
  • If an older child is venturing out without supervision, ask him/her to go with a group. Discuss the route and agree on a curfew. Give older kids cell phones so they can stay in touch.

For drivers

  • Be alert for children and eliminate in-car distractions.
  • Drive slowly.
  • Practice extra caution at intersections and corners.
  • Pull in and out of driveways carefully.

For residents handing out treats

  • Keep your home brightly lit.
  • Clear debris and other obstacles from your lawn, sidewalks and steps.
  • Opt for battery-operated candles in jack-o’-lanterns instead of candles.
  • Keep pets kenneled or in another room.

Additionally, Fairfax County Police recommend families use the Nextdoor Treat Map to find safe homes to visit in your neighborhood. You can access the Treat Map at www.nextdoor.com/treat. If you're signed up for Nextdoor, you can add their homes to the map. Choose the Teal Pumpkin if you're handing out non-food treats for trick-or-treaters with food allergies.

Have a safe and happy Halloween!
