What's Open, Closed In Fairfax County Amid Coronavirus Concerns
Closures are being announced amid the new coronavirus outbreak. We're rounding up the latest closure announcements.
The new coronavirus, or COVID-19, outbreak continues to rapidly evolve, and Fairfax County is announcing operating changes. As cases of the new coronavirus continue to rise daily in Virginia, there have been closures, event cancellations and other impacts.

Fairfax County Public Schools: Fairfax County Public Schools are closed through April 10, and all school buildings and administrative offices are closed until further notice. There are 29 to-go meal distribution sites open for breakfast and lunch.

School Age Child Care: School Age Child Care is closed during weeks of March 16 and March 23. The spring break services will not be offered.
Senior Centers: Fairfax County senior centers and adult day health care centers are closed until further notice. Starting Monday, March 16, Fairfax County will provide meal delivery service to registered participants at their request. Staff will contact participants and caregivers directly to make those arrangements.
Fairfax County Park Authority: Fairfax County Park Authority facilities will be closed from March 16 until further notice, including RECenters, nature centers, historic sites, visitor centers, equestrian facilities and golf courses. In addition, events, classes, programs and permitted use of athletic fields, parks, historic sites, campgrounds, and picnic shelters are also canceled during this time period. While parks, dog parks and trails remain open, the park authority urges visitors to follow social distancing guidelines and the large gatherings mandate.
Fairfax County libraries: The twenty-two full-service libraries are closed from Monday, March 16 until further notice. Library-sponsored programs and meeting room bookings are canceled through April 12. Due dates will be extended for 30 days, and overdue fines will be suspended.
Fairfax County community centers: NCS community centers/neighborhood centers/resource centers and teen centers are closed until further notice.
Fairfax County courts: The Supreme Court of Virginia declared a judicial emergency, it ordered all non-essential, non-emergency proceedings for circuit and district courts to be suspended.
Through Friday, April 17, the Fairfax County Circuit Court will only hear, criminal arraignments, criminal bond motions and civil emergency motions. Emergency motions include arraignments, bail review, protective order cases, emergency child custody and child protection cases and quarantine and isolation matters.
The Fairfax County General District Court will postpone or continue regular court hearings through April 17 except for bond motions (8:30 a.m.), video advisements (8:30 a.m.), motions court (9:30 a.m.), information on attorney court (9:30 a.m.), arraignment court (9:30 and 10:30 a.m.), mental health specialty docket (10:45 a.m.) and protective order court (1:30 p.m.)
For incarcerated defendants, the court will continue to hear: criminal and traffic court (9:30 a.m.), supervised release violations court (9:45 a.m.), preliminary hearing court (2 p.m.) and sentencing and non-comp courts (2 p.m.). These changes apply to all General District Court divisions, including the Towns of Vienna and Herndon.
Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court is suspending many hearings, trials, and other events, through May 10.
Metro: Metro made additional service cuts and asks for riders to only take essential trips, covering personnel like hospital staff, government officials, and emergency responders.
Virginia Railway Express: Effective March 17, VRE will operate at a reduced “S” schedule level, and only trains marked with an “S” on the schedule will run. VRE Headquarters in Alexandria will be closed to visitors.
