• African Landing Day honors 1619 arrival of enslaved Africans in Virginia (wtvr.com) — Hampton is hosting African Landing Commemoration Week now through August 29, with events at the Convention Center and Fort Monroe honoring the 1619 arrival of the first recorded Africans in English North America. Residents can join descendants, historians, and community leaders for programs on memory, resilience, and culture, culminating in a national ceremony and new memorial sculptures unveiling at Fort Monroe. 
• Hampton Wins Award for Advancing Economic Equity and Inclusion (hamptonroadsmessenger.com) — Hampton has earned a Bronze Excellence in Economic Development Award for its work advancing economic equity through the Department of Economic Empowerment and Family Resilience. City leaders highlight how redeveloping the former Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind and other initiatives are expanding entrepreneurship, workforce training, and economic mobility for residents, especially those facing poverty or tight budgets.
