📰 News we're reading

1. Motorcyclist killed in Prince George County crash, police say (wtvr.com) — A 27-year-old Hopewell resident was killed late Wednesday night when their motorcycle collided with a car at Jefferson Park and Owens Way in neighboring Prince George County. Police say the car’s driver suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and crash reconstruction specialists are still investigating. Witnesses are urged to contact Prince George County Police or submit anonymous tips via the P3 app.

2. Petersburg community rallies to support 114 residents displaced from Carriage House Apartments (wtvr.com) — Some of the more than 114 Petersburg residents displaced from Carriage House Apartments are now staying in a Hopewell hotel while their building is repaired. Local nonprofits, the Petersburg NAACP, and city transit are coordinating food, transportation, and basic supplies, and organizers stress that support must be sustained because many residents, including elderly people, may be in hotels for an extended period.

3. Notice of application for operating authority (henricocitizen.com) — Hopewell residents could soon see expanded passenger and Medicaid transportation service if CG Mobility’s application for statewide operating authority is approved. The DMV is accepting written protests through June 5, 2026, from anyone who believes they’d be harmed by this new service, and will decide whether a hearing is needed based on the evidence submitted.

4. Virginia DEQ expands drought warning to 94 counties, 33 cities (wric.com) — Hopewell is now included in Virginia’s expanded drought warning advisory, meaning local soil moisture is well below normal and residents are urged to prepare for ongoing dry conditions. The DEQ’s update adds more counties and cities statewide, keeping nearly all of Virginia under either a drought watch or warning.
