Man Assaults Elderly Family Member, Officer in Gainesville: Police

He also stole the 73-year-old man's car, then used it to hit an officer trying to detain him, say Prince William County Police.

GAINESVILLE, VA — A drunk man who assaulted an elderly family member, stole his car keys and then ran into a responding officer in the 14700 block of Deming Drive was arrested Monday, according to Prince William County Police.

Delanyo Kwaku Appiah, 36, of the 14700 block of Deming Drive, was charged with one count of attempted malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer, one count of attempted malicious wounding, one count of robbery, one count of unauthorized use of a vehicle, one count of driving under the influence of two counts of felony hit and run.

Shortly before 6 p.m., police responded to a report of a domestic assault, where a 73-year-old man said Appiah had pushed him during a fight before stealing his car keys.

Appiah was found by police sitting in the victim's car, and when an officer opened the driver's side door an asked him to exit the vehicle, Appiah instead put the vehicle in reverse and pinned the officer between the door and sign.

Appiah then sped away from the scene before being stopped and arrested in the area of McGraws Corner.

The victim and the officer suffered minor injuries, and Appiah is being held without bond.
