During their investigation, authorities determined that the victim, Mary Anne Smoot and a family member went to the apartment to meet with McCray on Monday morning. The family member and McCray had a previous relationship, police said.

During the meeting, an argument broke out between McCray and Smoot. Authorities claimed that McCray then shot Smoot multiple time before fleeing the scene.
