'Yes We Khan!' Fundraiser Wants Khizr Khan to Run for Virginia Legislature

Tom Keefe's Crowdpac.com campaign raised nearly $12,000 in a little more than 24 hours.

Following his dramatic smackdown of GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump last week at the Democratic National Convention, Khizr Khan is being courted for elected office.

At least that's the aim of Democratic activist Tom Keefe, who wants to see Khan — a Charlottesville, Virginia, lawyer — become a member of Virginia's House of Delegates.

He began a fundraiser Wednesday on Crowdpac.com called "Yes We Khan."

And as of late Thursday morning, it had raised $11,719 from 86 individual pledges.

"It's not only about Mr. Khan," Keefe, a Vietnam War veteran, told NBC News. "It's really my deep dislike for Mr. Trump and some of the things he has done to veterans over the years."

Khan's son, U.S. Army Captain Humayun Khan, was killed in 2004 while serving in Iraq.

In his DNC speech, Khizr Khan mentioned that sacrifice and said Trump had never sacrificed anything. He included the now-famous question, aimed at Trump and delivered directly to the camera. "Let me ask you, have you even read the United States Constitution?" he asked, as he pulled out a pocket copy of the document and held it in the air. "I will gladly lend you my copy."

Pocket copies of the Constitution have soared in popularity since then, reaching No. 2 on Amazon's best-sellers list.

Trump, who's running against Hillary Clinton, has said he was unfairly attacked and wondered in an interview with ABC News why Khan's wife, Ghazala, remained silent beside her husband, suggesting she might have been required to because of her Muslim faith.

Even New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie took issue with Trump's criticism of a mother and father who lost their son in war in Iraq, saying any such statements would be "inappropriate" — even if the targets of the statements have been critical of the GOP presidential nominee, whom Christie has endorsed.

The Khans' son was born in the United Arab Emirates, grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, and graduated from the University of Virginia.

The delegate seat in Virginia's 58th district is held by Rep. Robert Ball, a Republican in Albemarle.

No word yet from Khan about the "Yes We Khan" movement.
