Drawn back to coastal life, he and his wife built a home off Horn Harbor, where neighbors encouraged his Rotary involvement and introduced him to hands-on community service close to home. 
• Hartfield family's naval legacy comes full circle at Sail250 • SSentinel.com (ssentinel.com) — Mathews Yacht Club’s commodore, a Hartfield resident, led a five-boat club delegation in Norfolk’s Sail250 celebration, escorting tall ships from Spain and Chile. The event, part of America’s 250th anniversary festivities, held special meaning for her husband, whose grandfather once commanded the Spanish training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, bringing their family’s naval history full circle.
