Colonial Summer Market Fair Coming Up At Claude Moore Farm

With Claude Moore Colonial Farm's future uncertain, there's still a chance to attend one of its more popular events.

MCLEAN, VA—What becomes of Claude Moore Farm after Dec. 21 is up in the air, but for now patrons can enjoy an event it's become known for. The Colonial Summer Market Fair will be held Saturday, July 21 and Sunday, July 22 from 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Visitors can see the 18th century come to life with demonstrations, games, food and more fun. Staff and volunteers will appear in character dressed in 18th century attire. Activities will include a children's puppet theatre, 18th century demonstrations such as spinning, dyeing, learning how to dip a candle and the blacksmith working, make-your-own corn husk doll. Heritage breed animals like Ossabow pigs and turkeys will be on site.

Lunch available for purchase will include spit roasted chicken, sausages and bread, roasted olives, seasonal vegetables, watermelon and fruit pies. The Colonial Tavern also serves a variety of beer and ale, wine, lemonade and ginger ale.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for kids and senior and free for kids under three. Parking is free. All proceeds support the privately-run living history programming at the farm.

The farm will close on Dec. 21 as the cooperative agreement between the Friends of Claude Moore Colonial Farm and the National Park Service ends. Earlier this year, the the Friends of Claude Moore Colonial Farm chose to not accept the short-term agreement NPS offered, claiming that the terms were burdensome. The park typically closes for the winter, but NPS has left the door open for allowing the park to go on with a new partner or the existing volunteers.
