NoVA Company Tops Best Large Workplaces For Women List

MCLEAN, VA — A new ranking by business magazine Fortune put a Northern Virginia company at the top of the 75 best large workplaces for women across the United States.

Virginia had three headquarters of companies make the list. Hospitality giant Hilton, based in McLean, took the number one spot. The company has women making up 53 percent of the workforce. This includes 51 percent of women in non-executive management positions and 29 percent in executive manager positions.

The ranking cites feedback from a mid-level manager at Hilton. "I’ve been given multiple opportunities and career paths, which has allowed me to build a significant amount of institutional knowledge and experience," reads the review of the company. "I’ve been afforded the opportunity to learn, grow, advance, and show what I can do."

The other large companies on the list were Vienna-based Navy Federal Credit Union at number nine and McLean's Capital One Financial Corporation at number 64.

The selection criteria was centered around the extent to which organizations created an environment where workers trusted each other and felt like they could reach their maximum potential, as well as the level of gender fairness, employee inclusion, and equal experiences across gender and racial lines.

The bulk of the criteria was based on an anonymous 60-question survey that went out to more than 4.6 million U.S. employees. Only companies with over 1,000 employees were included.

Fifteen percent of the ranking was based on how well-represented women were in the workforce and in management positions within the company. To even be considered, companies needed to employ at least 50 women, have at least 20 percent of their non-executive managers be female, and have at least one female executive.

The 75 workplaces that made the rankings ranged through 16 different industries, including construction, hospitality, real estate, and transportation. Financial Services & Insurance had the highest number of workplaces on the list, with 18.

One Virginia company made the related list of 25 Best Small and Medium Workplaces for Women. Reston's Collaborative Solutions came in at third place.
