Richest Place In Virginia Has $311K Average Income: Ranking
The three towns on Bloomberg's list fell a few places, but they remain among the 50 richest places in America.
Three places in Virginia continue to claim spots on Bloomberg's 2020 Richest Places in the U.S. list. Bloomberg has been compiling the ranking, based on average household income, since 2017.
Virginia's towns fell in the ranking since last year but remained in the top 50. Great Falls placed 20th with an average household income of $311,915. The change from 16th to 20th place in the ranking wasn't due to declining income — Great Falls' average household income increased from $309,599 since last year's ranking. Rather, it reflects other towns surpassing or remaining above Great Falls for average household income.
The next Virginia town on the list was McLean at 30 with an average household income of $293,323. McLean fell from 25th place last year, although its average income rose from $283,992.

Rounding out Virginia towns on the list was Wolf Trap at 47, down from 42 in last year's ranking. The average household income increased from $261,610 to $265,175.
Bloomberg evaluated nearly 6,300 U.S. locations with at least 2,000 households, ranking them by average household income. Towns on the list came from 16 states, a balance of wealth that Bloomberg wrote "remains largely unchanged over time."

A few states had more places in the top 100 than Virginia. California led the country with 23 towns, followed by New Jersey with 16, New York with 12, Illinois with 11, Texas with eight, Maryland with six and Connecticut with four. Atherton, California led the list for the fourth year with an average household income of $525,324.
