The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (SNAP) benefits program will endure cuts, as of Friday, November 1, 2013. SNAP benefits for participants will average less than $1.40 per person per meal in 2014 with this impending reduction.
This makes our work even more pressing. The amount of food thrown out daily in our school cafeterias is astonishing.
Food Bus works with local schools to figure out how to save all the nutritious perishables (milk, cheese, fruit, vegetables, hummus etc) that would otherwise be thrown out. We buy refrigerators, carts, boxes and whatever else a participating school needs in order to get the food to the hungry in our community.
