Top Children's Hospitals In VA, DC: U.S. News & World Report

WASHINGTON, DC — One children’s hospital in Virginia and one in Washington, D.C., are among the best in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings.

The best children’s hospitals for 2019-20 rankings released on Tuesday feature the 50 best hospitals in 10 pediatric specialties and 10 hospitals that landed on U.S. News’ honor roll. The hospitals on the honor roll “deliver exceptionally high-quality care across multiple specialties.”

In the District of Columbia, one hospital made the top 10 honor roll: Children's National Medical Center, which is ranked in 10 pediatric specialties. And one other hospital was ranked among the top 50 in nine pediatric specialties: The University of Virginia Children's Hospital, Charlottesville.

The Virginia and Washington, D.C., hospitals ranked for pediatric specialties are:

Cancer: Children's National Medical Center in DC, No. 9

Cardiology and Heart Surgery: University of Virginia Children's Hospital, Charlottesville, No. 37; Children's National Medical Center in DC, No. 42

Diabetes & Endocrinology: Children's National Medical Center in DC, No. 14, University of Virginia Children's Hospital, Charlottesville, No. 27

Gastroenterology & Gastrointestinal Surgery: Children's National Medical Center in DC, No. 13; University of Virginia Children's Hospital, Charlottesville, No. 37

Neonatology: Children's National Medical Center in DC, No. 1; University of Virginia Children's Hospital, Charlottesville, No. 40

Nephrology: Children's National Medical Center in DC, No. 6; University of Virginia Children's Hospital, Charlottesville, No. 47

Neurology & Neurosurgery: Children's National Medical Center in DC, No. 5; University of Virginia Children's Hospital, Charlottesville, No. 33

Orthopedics: Children's National Medical Center in DC, No. 16

Pulmonology & Lung Surgery: Children's National Medical Center in DC, No. 9; University of Virginia Children's Hospital, Charlottesville, No. 49

Urology: Children's National Medical Center in DC, No. 19; University of Virginia Children's Hospital, Charlottesville, No. 47

3. Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
4. Texas Children's Hospital, Houston
5. Children's National Medical Center, Washington, D.C.
6. Children's Hospital Los Angeles
7. Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus, Ohio
8. Johns Hopkins Children's Center, Baltimore
9. Children's Hospital Colorado, Aurora
10. Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago

U.S. News says its methodology in tabulating the rankings takes into account measures like patient outcome, including mortality and infection rates, and also available clinical resources and compliance with best practices. (You can read more about the methodology here.)
