Top Children's Hospitals In VA, DC: U.S. News & World Report
One hospital in Virginia and one in DC are among the best for children in the U.S., says U.S. News & World Report's latest rankings.
WASHINGTON, DC — One children’s hospital in Virginia and one in Washington, D.C., are among the best in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual rankings.
The best children’s hospitals for 2019-20 rankings released on Tuesday feature the 50 best hospitals in 10 pediatric specialties and 10 hospitals that landed on U.S. News’ honor roll. The hospitals on the honor roll “deliver exceptionally high-quality care across multiple specialties.”
In the District of Columbia, one hospital made the top 10 honor roll: Children's National Medical Center, which is ranked in 10 pediatric specialties. And one other hospital was ranked among the top 50 in nine pediatric specialties: The University of Virginia Children's Hospital, Charlottesville.

“While health care is rapidly changing, the objective of U.S. News’ Best Children’s Hospitals remains the same: provide families with a comprehensive and trusted starting point as they, in consultation with their doctors and other medical professionals, search for the pediatric care they need,” Ben Harder, Chief of Health Analysis and Managing Editor at U.S. News, said in a news release. “Our rankings, now in their 13th year, have always put parents and young patients at the front and center of our mission.”
The 10 hospitals that made U.S. News’ honor roll are:
- Boston Children's Hospital
- Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center
- Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
- Texas Children's Hospital, Houston
- Children's National Medical Center, Washington, D.C.
- Children's Hospital Los Angeles
- Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus, Ohio
- Johns Hopkins Children's Center, Baltimore
- Children's Hospital Colorado, Aurora
- Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago
U.S. News says its methodology in tabulating the rankings takes into account measures like patient outcome, including mortality and infection rates, and also available clinical resources and compliance with best practices. (You can read more about the methodology here.)
