A Delicious Tradition

Occasionally Cake turned two on Thursday and to celebrate, cupcakes were on the house.

It’s not every day that you can walk into Occasionally Cake and waltz out with a Snickerdoodle, Red Velvet or Lemon Tangerine cupcake, free of charge. It doesn’t happen every day, but it does happen once a year.

To celebrate the sweet shop’s second birthday, everybody was invited in for their choice of free cupcake on Thursday, July 21. Occasionally Cake did the same thing last year, and they’ll continue to comp cupcakes on their birthday every year they’re open.

“When you give back to the community that supports you, there’s no better business practice than that,” said owner Sabrina Campbell.  “To say thank you, it’s the least I can do.”

Customers got to choose from half a dozen flavors including Pink Champagne and Chocolate Razzleberry. Campbell said business was steady all day; their goal was to either give away or sell each of the 1,500 cupcakes they started the day with.

Thursday’s celebration also had an underlying message of education and philanthropy.  Campbell’s family has always personally donated to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, so she decided 50 percent of Thursday’s proceeds at Occasionally Cake as well as all in-store donations would benefit the charity.

“They have a lot to do and they need funds.  We have two little girls,” Campbell said.  “The worst thing for a parent is something happening to their child.”

A representative from the organization was on site with a video and materials for families who came by.
