Food Drive Benefits Capital Area Food Bank

Chamber sponsors food drive for Capital Area Food Bank now through July 4.

Today the Chamber met at the Lorton site of the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) to network and take a tour of the facility.  The Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce is conducting a food drive to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank as part of an initiative by Governor McDonnell to energize business groups to conduct food drives during the summer.  Summer is a time when contributions to food banks are traditionally lower but the need remains consistent.

The Capital Area Food Bank distributes more than 25 million pounds of food each year through a network of partner agencies which include soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters, youth programs and faith-based organizations.   While we were at the CAFB, Jose Fratti, manager of the food pantry at UCM came to pick up an order of food.

Cecilia Vergaretti is the energetic and committed director of the Lorton CAFB locations.  Cecilia has a small, impressive staff that provides service to the organizations coming for food.  Her staff also does community outreach and works with a variety of government agencies and volunteer groups.   It is a very impressive group of people committed to alleviating hunger.

The Capital Area Food Bank is an organization that needs and deserves the support of our community.  Each year almost a half million people receive access to healthy food through their efforts.  Let’s all do what we can to help a local organization that does so much for the neediest in our community.
