Veterans from the Greatest Generation to the Latest Generation

Veterans Day was celebrated and the chamber of commerce renewed the Army Community Covenant with Fort Belvoir.

The chamber of commerce celebrated Veterans Day and renewed our Community Covenant with Fort Belvoir on Friday, November 9, at Fort Belvoir Elementary School.

We were honored to partner with The History Channel, US Veterans Administration, and Cox Communications for the "Take a Vet to School" event.

Excitement is the only word that can describe the feeling of Veterans interacting with the students at Fort Belvoir Elementary School.  There were Veterans from all service branches and from World War II to Operation Iraqi Freedom going into the classroom talking about their experiences and answering questions.

The children were prepared to recite, sing, and show their love of the red, white, and blue.  It was exciting and reassuring to know that children are learning the values of service to country.  The History Channel sponsors this event nationwide as a way of bringing history into the classroom.  More than 10,000 schools across America were part of “Take a Vet to School” day.

Veterans Day is a time to reflect on the great sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform to keep the United States a free country, and to extend the opportunities of freedom throughout the world.

Introducing the Army Community Covenant Renewal, Chamber Chair
Michael Gailliot said, “The Army Community Covenant is a public expression of
the gratitude we as a community show to our uniformed service people.  The Covenant reaffirms the commitment to building strong community support for military families."

At the chamber of commerce we know that businesses, together with schools and other community organizations, form a network that strengthens and supports military families.  Strong families and strong community support work together to ensure the readiness and resilience of our armed forces.

The Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce is proud to host this fourth Covenant Renewal Ceremony.    As an additional part of our Veterans Day celebration, many businesses are offering special discounts to active duty military.Click here to see a list of “military appreciation” discounts.

This Veterans Day, we honor and thank our Veterans from the Greatest Generation to the Latest Generation.
