Cutie Crate Upcycle to Vintage Trunk

Now, I know this NEVER happens to any of you.  We have a little basket right inside the door to catch all of the wallets, phones, glasses, iPods, etc.

And the drop zone is everywhere except in the basket.

We have this awesome vintage trunk in our entry in lieu of a console table.  In my head, I was going to upcycle a cutie box to create this incredible vintage trunk box to collect all of the door clutter.  The only problem - I have not been blessed with the DIY/Crafty gene.  But it's fun to try.

Here's what I started with:
Cutie/Clementine Crate
Pleather/Vinyl Material
Hardware
Suede and Velvet Ribbon

First, I wrapped the cutie crate in the pleather/vinyl material.  I used both hot glue and also stapled it down.

Then I added some pretty velvet ribbon with hot glue as a trim.  I wanted it in leather/suede material but I couldn't find any more of it.

Next came the hinges and hardware and tacks.  Then I hot glued the handles.  Finally, I fixed up the inside... and...

TA DA!

Most of my DIY projects are frugal (that's the whole point, right?).  This one was less on the frugal side because I wanted to replicate the look of our vintage trunk.

This is what it took to complete:
4 stores to find everything I needed (craft rookie - I could have planned better)
$25.00 in supplies (hello clearance bin!)
Hot glue, scissors, and phillips screwdriver
3 hours of labor.
Was it worth the effort?

What do you think?  Have you ever upcycled a Cutie Crate?  What did you make with it?

Love, hugs, and happy to have a Cutie home for the not so Cutie door clutter.
