Fairfax County to Celebrate National Farmers Market Week

Park Authority will hold special activities at 11 farmers markets from Wednesday, Aug. 6-16. See schedule below.

The Fairfax County Park Authority is celebrating the 15th Annual National Farmers Market Week with special activities at its 11 farmers markets August 6 to 16. The U.S. Department of Agriculture began declaring National Farmers Week in 2000 to recognize the important role that farmers markets play in the agricultural and food economy.

Activities in the markets will take place during regularly scheduled market times and include:

1. Customers will enjoy cooking demos from the Virginia Cooperative Extension’s Master Food Volunteers at the McCutcheon/Mount Vernon, Government Center, Reston and Lorton farmers markets.

3. There will be educational information and interactive displays on the eco-stewardship of small farms. This will include information about the ways farmers are working hard to enhance the fertility of farmed soil, decrease polluted runoff into our waterways, and increase the biodiversity of the farmlands in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
