“Movers Who Care” Supports Family Struggling With Disability
Moving is never easy or inexpensive, but when a homeless family finally finds a home of their own, furniture can feel like a luxury.
Moving is never easy or inexpensive, but when a homeless family finally finds a home of their own, furniture of any kind can feel like a luxury that is outside their budget.
Recently, a homeless family came to Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services (GSH) struggling to find housing because the mother has a disability that has left her confined to a wheelchair. The family had been living in a motel with no idea when they might be able to find a place to live they could call their own.
Low-income households and individuals with disabilities face extra challenges when looking for housing that they can both afford and that is accessible. Just this month, GSH had a first-floor unit become available that they have now modified with a ramp to accommodate her wheelchair.

Unfortunately, living in a hotel for months meant this family had no furniture of their own, not even a bed to sleep on.
However, thanks to TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®, a local moving business, along with generous donors who offered up several rooms full of furniture, the family now can call the apartment a home.

The high quality furniture donated included:
- A loveseat
- Matching night stands
- Several bookshelves
- Dresser
- Bureau with matching mirror
Thanks to these generous donors, this family would get a fresh start without breaking their budget.
"TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is committed to giving back to our community," said Zach Killdall, General Manager of Two Men and a Truck – Northern VA/DC. "When GSH called and shared their client’s story, we didn't hesitate to help. We are proud members of the Mount Vernon community, which has a strong history of supporting families in need."
GSH welcomes inquiries from downsizing homeowners who may have rooms full of high-quality furniture to donate.
