Mount Vernon Track and Field kicked off the holiday vacation with 5 different wins at the Winter Track Festival, hosted at Prince George Sport and Learning in Maryland. The Lady Majors were led by senior Kaleigh Winner, who was a triple winner, highlighted by a personal win in the 300 meter dash. Additionally, Winner led-off the victorious 4x200 meter relay team (VA #3-1:48.85) over South County Secondary, and anchored the 4x400m team (VA #2-4:11.04) to a win over Bishop McNamara. Both relays automatically qualify for the VHSL State Championship to be held at Boo Williams at the end of February.
Joining Winner on the 4x200m team were double winners senior Alliyah Stevens, who also captured the 55m hurdles (8.73) in a state-auto time, junior Macuta Conteh and junior anchor Zariyah Spence. Winner, Spence and Conteh were joined by junior Ariana Scott in the 1st place 4x400 meter relay, which now leads the North Region.
Also earning an automatic state qualifying berth was senior Shardae Watts in the shot put, with a new personal best throw of 35’3.5” to take over the #1 spot in the North Region (VA #5). Earning Region automatic bids in the boys shot put was junior Dominic Hill (VA #5 – 45’0.5”) and senior Daniel Frimpong (VA #9 – 44’9.5”)
Winning the boys 4x200m relay over Chantilly HS and South County Secondary were seniors CJ Heyward, Desire Quist, and Jordan McGrigg, along with junior anchor Joshua McGrigg. They now rank VA #6 with a time of 1:35.56.
