The Mount Vernon–Lee Chamber of Commerce recognized Mount Vernon Community Children’s Theatre (MVCCT) as THE BEST Organization for 2013 last night at their annual Holiday Biz awards banquet. MVCCT was recognized for their continued work with local youth through stage productions, theatre camps and after-school outreach programs
Mount Vernon Community Children’s Theatre was founded in 1980 as a not-for-profit organization to provide area youth with quality theatrical experiences that are educational, creative, engaging and supportive. Through the use of hands-on learning of the theatrical arts, MVCCT offers children, ages 5-18, the opportunity to enhance their development---building self-confidence, character, self-expression, autonomy and responsibility.
MVCCT's programs are twofold: each year three productions are presented, directed by professionals and featuring children in all roles. Additionally MVCCT has an active education program, which includes after-school programs in Fairfax County Public Schools, spring break camp, and summer camps. MVCCT is committed to reaching those who may not be able to afford the tuition for productions, classes and camps by offering need-based scholarships to qualified participants. This past year approx. 800 children have participated in MVCCT programs, with 75 of those participating on scholarship.

All of this is accomplished by a volunteer board of directors, and contracted theatre professionals with the support of only three paid part-time staff members. This work could not be accomplished without a host of parent and community volunteers. The 'community' in the name of the organization is truly reflective of how MVCCT functions.
