Overnight Lane Closures on Richmond Highway (Route 1) Extended Through Sept. 20 for Railroad Bridge Removal

Lane closures continue next week, September 15-20, north of Fort Belvoir's Tulley gate.

Multiple lane closures will continue next week during overnight hours on Route 1 between Pohick Road and Belvoir Road, in order for crews to continue removing a railroad bridge. Lanes will be closed on Monday night, Sept. 15 through Thursday, Sept. 18, between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m., and again Friday night, Sept. 19 from 11 p.m. - 5 a.m. on Saturday, according to a notice from VDOT.

During these closures, traffic will be reduced to one lane while the bridge girders are cut and temporarily supported. Friday after midnight, all lanes will be closed intermittently for up to 15 minutes at a time while crews remove the bridge girders. Motorists should expect delays.

This bridge removal began last week, and is being extended through next week due to weather and unforeseen construction complexities. The bridge is being removed as part of the Route 1 Widening Project, which involves adding another north and southbound lane with a 32-foot wide median for a 3.68-mile segment of Route 1 between Telegraph Road and Mount Vernon Memorial Highway in the Fort Belvoir area. The Route 1 Widening Project is being managed by the Federal Highway Administration’s Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division, in coordination with the Virginia Department of Transportation.
